History of Surat is not unknown to an average surti. Although we tend to know all about Surat still there are some important events we have missed. Let’s see what they are:
Surat city is in the Indian state of Gujarat and was historically known as Suryapur. The city is located on the banks of river Tapi and has about a 6 km long coastal belt along the Arabian Sea.
Due to these reasons, the city emerged as an important trade center. It enjoyed prosperity through sea trade in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Surat became the most important trade link between India and many other countries. It was at the height of prosperity till the rise of Bombay port in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Surat was also a flourishing center for shipbuilding activities. The whole coast of Tapi from Athwalines to Dumas was specially meant for shipbuilders. After the rise of the port at Bombay, Surat faced a severe blow and its shipbuilding industry also declined.
It used to be a large seaport and is now the commercial and economic center in South Gujarat. Surat city is famous for its diamonds and textile industries and as a shopping center for apparel and accessories.
Surat city is the 8th largest and 9th largest urban city in India.
The city is located 284 kilometers (176 mi) south of the state capital, Gandhinagar; 265 kilometers (165 mi) south of Ahmedabad; and 289 kilometers (180 mi) north of Mumbai.
